Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, is one of the most famous leaders in American history. He led the country during the Civil War, ended slavery, and was known for his honesty and kindness. But did you know these six fun and little-known facts about him?
1. He Was the Tallest U.S. President
Abraham Lincoln was 6 feet 4 inches tall, making him the tallest president in U.S. history! With his famous tall top hat, he looked even taller!
2. He Kept Important Papers in His Hat
Speaking of his top hat, Lincoln used it as more than just a fashion statement. He stored important notes and letters inside it, so he wouldn’t lose them. Imagine carrying your homework in your hat instead of a backpack!
3. He Was an Animal Lover—And Even Had a Pet Turkey!
Lincoln loved animals and had many pets, including dogs, cats, and even a turkey named Jack! Jack was supposed to be Thanksgiving dinner, but Lincoln’s son, Tad, begged his father to spare him. Lincoln agreed, and Jack became a pet instead!
4. He Was a Champion Wrestler
Before becoming president, Lincoln was an excellent wrestler. He reportedly won nearly 300 matches and was so good that he was once given the honorary title of "wrestling champion" in his region.
5. He Had a High-Pitched Voice
Even though Lincoln was tall and powerful, he didn’t have a deep voice! People who heard him speak described his voice as high-pitched and squeaky—but he was such a great speaker that people listened anyway!
6. He Created the Secret Service—On the Day He Was Assassinated
Lincoln signed the bill to create the Secret Service, the group that now protects U.S. presidents, on April 14, 1865—the same day he was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre. Sadly, the Secret Service wasn’t designed to protect presidents at that time, but today, it’s their most important job.
