Fun Facts About Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was America’s third president, but did you know he was also an inventor, foodie, and book lover? Here are six fun and little-known facts about Thomas Jefferson that kids will enjoy!

1. He Wrote the Declaration of Independence—at Just 33 Years Old!

Jefferson was the main writer of the Declaration of Independence, which he finished when he was just 33 years old! He was so proud of this that he made sure it was one of the three accomplishments listed on his tombstone—but he didn’t mention being president!

2. He Was a Huge Bookworm

Jefferson loved books so much that when the Library of Congress lost all its books in a fire, he donated his personal collection—which had over 6,000 books! His love of reading helped shape the biggest library in the U.S. today.

3. He Sent the First "Secret Message" to Congress

Jefferson was the first president to send a top-secret message to Congress! It was about funding the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the West. The message was written in code, making Jefferson kind of like a real-life spy master!

4. He Was a Foodie Who Loved Mac & Cheese

Jefferson loved good food and even helped popularize macaroni and cheese in America! He discovered it while traveling in Europe and even brought back a special pasta-making machine.

5. He Designed His Own Home—Monticello!

Not only was Jefferson a writer and leader, but he was also an architect! He designed his famous home, Monticello, himself, and it had cool inventions like a hidden dumbwaiter (mini elevator) to bring up wine bottles and a special rotating book stand.

6. He and John Adams Died on the Same Day—July 4th!

Just like his old friend (and rival) John Adams, Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826—exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence! What are the chances of that?
