George Washington’s Honey Cornbread Muffins
George Washington loved simple, hearty foods made with ingredients from his farm. Cornbread was a common dish in colonial times, and Washington had a sweet tooth—he especially loved honey! Try this easy, kid-friendly recipe to bake delicious Honey Cornbread Muffins, just like something Washington might have enjoyed at Mount Vernon. Ingredients:
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup honey 🍯
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/3 cup melted butter
2 eggs
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a muffin tin with paper liners or grease it lightly.
In a large bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, eggs, and honey.
Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. (Don't overmix!)
Scoop the batter into the muffin tin, filling each cup about 2/3 full.
Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool for a few minutes, then enjoy with butter or extra honey on top!
Fun Fact: Washington kept beehives at Mount Vernon, so he likely had fresh honey to enjoy with his meals! 🍯🐝
