Richard Henry Lee Proposes Independence: The Spark That Started It All on June 7

June 7 is a super exciting day in early American history — it's the date in 1776 when Richard Henry Lee of Virginia stood up in the Continental Congress and officially proposed that the 13 colonies should declare independence from Great Britain!

This bold idea was the very first step toward creating the United States of America. Lee’s resolution said the colonies should be “free and independent states.” John Adams from Massachusetts quickly seconded the motion. After weeks of debate, this proposal led directly to Thomas Jefferson writing the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted on July 4, 1776.

Even though there was no president yet (George Washington became the first in 1789), this moment helped shape the future presidency and the entire country we know today.

If you're learning about the American Revolution, the Founding Fathers, or how America was born, this June 7 event is one of the most important sparks of freedom!

The Big Moment on June 7, 1776
  • Delegates from all 13 colonies were meeting in Philadelphia.
  • Richard Henry Lee read his famous resolution out loud.
  • It basically said: “We want to be free from King George and Britain!”
  • The Congress didn’t vote right away — they needed time to think and get support from all the colonies.
  • But Lee’s words started everything. A committee (including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin) was formed to write the official Declaration.
This brave proposal showed that the colonies were ready to fight for their own country.

Fun Facts for Kids
  • Richard Henry Lee’s family was very important in Virginia — his brother was also a leader.
  • The resolution is sometimes called the Lee Resolution.
  • When the Declaration was finally signed on August 2, 1776, John Hancock signed his name huge so King George could read it without glasses!
  • Many of the men who supported Lee’s idea later became presidents or vice presidents.
  • The Continental Congress met in a building now called Independence Hall — you can still visit it today!
Why June 7 Is Important in Presidential HistoryThis day marks the beginning of the dream for a free and independent nation with its own leaders. Without Richard Henry Lee’s bold proposal, there might never have been a Declaration of Independence or a United States with presidents like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or others. It reminds us that one person’s brave idea can change history forever and create the country we love.
