Presidents Who Expanded U.S. Territory: The Leaders Who Made America Bigger!

America started as 13 colonies hugging the Atlantic Ocean. Over time, the country grew into the huge nation we know today—thanks to bold presidents who added land through purchases, treaties, wars, and deals. These leaders literally expanded the map! Here’s a kid-friendly list of the presidents who added the most territory to the United States, ranked roughly by how much land they brought in (with approximate square miles and a fun fact for each).
  1. Thomas Jefferson (1801–1809)
    • Biggest Addition: Louisiana Purchase (1803)
    • Size Added: ~828,000 square miles (doubled the size of the U.S.!)
    • Fun fact for kids: Jefferson bought it from France for just 3 cents an acre—cheaper than a candy bar today! It included land that became 15 future states.
  2. James K. Polk (1845–1849)
    • Major Additions: Annexation of Texas (1845), Oregon Territory settlement (1846), Mexican Cession (1848)
    • Size Added: ~1.2 million square miles total (largest single-presidency expansion)
    • Fun fact: Polk promised to add Texas and Oregon in one term—and he did! He even got California and the Southwest in the deal.
  3. James Monroe (1817–1825)
    • Major Addition: Florida Purchase (1819) + Missouri Compromise lands
    • Size Added: ~72,000 square miles (Florida) + influence over western territories
    • Fun fact: His presidency was called the “Era of Good Feelings” because there was almost no fighting—everyone was too busy growing!
  4. Andrew Johnson (1865–1869)
    • Major Addition: Alaska Purchase (1867)
    • Size Added: ~586,000 square miles
    • Fun fact: People called it “Seward’s Folly” and “Seward’s Icebox” because they thought it was just frozen wasteland—now it’s famous for bears, volcanoes, and gold!
  5. James Polk (again – same guy!) & John Tyler
    • Texas Annexation (1845)
    • Size Added: ~389,000 square miles (Texas)
    • Fun fact: Tyler pushed for Texas right before leaving office—Polk finished the job. Texas was once its own country!
  6. Franklin Pierce (1853–1857)
    • Major Addition: Gadsden Purchase (1853)
    • Size Added: ~30,000 square miles (southern Arizona & New Mexico)
    • Fun fact: Bought from Mexico to make a better railroad route—sometimes called the “Railroad Purchase.”
  7. John Tyler (1841–1845)
    • Major Addition: Pushed Texas annexation (finalized under Polk)
    • Size Added: Set the stage for Texas (~389,000 sq mi)
    • Fun fact: Tyler had 15 children—more than any other president!
  8. Barack Obama (2009–2017)
    • Major Addition: Expanded U.S. territory in the ocean (2016)
    • Size Added: ~582,000 square miles of ocean (Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument expansion)
    • Fun fact: This made the U.S. the largest protected ocean area in the world—underwater territory counts too!
Quick Map of Growth
  • Jefferson doubled the country overnight.
  • Polk added the most in one term (Texas + Oregon + Southwest).
  • Total U.S. land today: ~3.8 million square miles—most of it added by just a few presidents!
Which president’s land grab sounds the most exciting—buying half the country for pennies or adding an ocean?
